Madonna has starred in a lot of music videos and movies over the years. Her look and manner of dress has been very influential among young girls and women. This influence can be seen in the multitudes of live performances and videos the star has appeared in. She also brought her trademark look and attitude to the big screen. She made her first film in 1979, a low-budget production titled “A Certain Sacrifice”. She appeared nude in this film and it was released in 1985 to capitalize on her popularity when Playboy and Penthouse released pictures of her in various naked poses. She entered mainstream films when she made a brief appearance in the 1985 movie “Vision Quest”. This movie featured one of her hit singles, “Crazy for You” and set the tone for her music and film collaboration. Most of the movies she appeared in have a song recorded by her included in its soundtrack.
Madonna played “Breathless” Mahoney in a film adaptation of the comic book Dick Tracy. She starred opposite Warren Beatty in this film which sparked a lot of rumors involving her with the actor. In 1991 she starred in her first documentary film entitled “Truth or Dare” which chronicled her music career as well as her personal life. She appeared in the baseball movie “A League of Their Own” opposite Hollywood greats Tom Hanks and Geena Davis the following year.
She appeared in two movies during 1993. The first was “Body of Evidence”, an erotic thriller, the film portrayed graphic scenes showing S & M and bondage. The second film, “Dangerous Game”, was the first production of her company, Maverick Entertainment. The film was not successful but Madonna’s performance in it was received with good reviews. The singer/actress said, “Even though it’s a shit movie and I hate it, I am good in it.”
“Evita” was her crown achievement in the film industry. Her performance in this 1996 movie earned her an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song from a Motion Picture for the song “You Must Love Me” as well as a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. She had a brief cameo role in the 20th James Bond film, “Die Another Day” and she sang the title song once again for this movie. She also appeared in the movie “The Next Best Thing” with Rupert Everett.
People from all over the world recognize Madonna also because of the numerous controversial music videos she has starred in. Her music videos have always displayed her method of fusing music with cinematic style. One might say that her music videos are short films in their own right. She has made videos expressing her sexuality, sometimes a bit too graphically, but nevertheless taken in by her fans especially the men who adore and admire her. Religious and social issues are also a favourite topic in her music and shows in most of her videos. This resulted in her confrontations with the Catholic Church. The Church has urged people to boycott her shows, especially the ones in which her performances have religious and sexual themes and symbolism. Some of her videos even have brief nudity, sadism and masochism. Sometimes, violence and physical abuse are present in her music videos and were subsequently banned by MTV.
Madonna is a star, both in television and on the big screen. Her performances are televised around the world, making her one of the most recognizable celebrities in the whole world.
